Handyman in Hermanus – Green Cleaning Tips

Here at Donnelly Home Maintenance in Hermanus and the Overberg we pride ourselves on trying to use as many green and eco-friendly products at we can as we don’t want to expose ourselves or our clients to unnecessary toxic fumes and chemicals.

If you want a greener clean here are some great tips:

• To prevent your bathroom mirror from fogging up with steam clean the mirror with shaving cream. Rub shaving cream all over the mirror and wipe it off thoroughly with a soft cloth.
• To remove stains in the toilet bowl pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and leave. The phosphoric acid in the Coca-Cola will eliminate the stain. Neat vinegar down the toilet can be used to replace bleach.
• Keep a spare or used toothbrush in the bathroom to use for cleaning awkward places.
• To dust venetian blinds put some polish on a pair of cotton gloves and wipe between the slats.

• A simple homemade wood furniture cleaner can be made by mixing 1 teaspoon of light olive oil with half a cup of white vinegar.
• To deodorise fitted carpets simply shake some bicarb over them, leave for a few hours and then vacuum.
• To clean burnt pans sprinkle a thick layer of bicarb of soda onto the burnt surface and leave overnight before scraping away the burn.
• Using bicarb on a sponge will give your sink a great shine and it will also remove soap scum from tiles in the bathroom
• Mirrors and glass windows and doors can be cleaned with a mix of half water, half vinegar and half a teaspoon of washing up liquid. Buff to shine.
• Lemon juice can be used as an antibacterial cleaner on kitchen surfaces and also leaves a fresh smell.

• Half a cut lemon can be left in the fridge to absorb odours and leave a fresh smell.
• A bowl of water boiled in the microwave with a couple of lemon slices or a squeeze of lemon juice will leave the microwave smelling fresh and the condensation makes it easy to wipe the interior.
