Hermanus Builder – Constructing a Basic Patio

Living in Hermanus there is nothing better than sitting in your back garden soaking up the summer sun and enjoying a drink in a lovely patio area….

Here are the basics:

1. Where do you want your patio to go?
2. Choose the design you want ~ the slabs, the shape and size and the style
3. Get measuring. It’s best to calculate in metres squared so that there is not any wastage
4. Mark out the area with string and make sure that you are happy with this
5. Dig up any lawn and any plants and allow at least 150mm depth for foundations
6. Lay a base of hard-core or stone and compact this for the paving slabs and rake until flat – allow at least 50mm depth
7. There needs to be a very slight gradual slope away from the building to allow water drainage
8. Lay a bedding mortar to a minimum of 50mm and lay your chosen slabs ~ it is best to start in a corner and work away from the building. Mortar comprises one part cement to four parts building sand.
9. If using different sizes of paving slabs lay them out dry on the lawn and number the slabs so that there is no confusion when laying them in the mortar as it dries quickly
10. Leave the mortar to dry for 24 hours and then begin pointing using a dry mix and push in using a pointing iron or bucket handle to ensure firm compaction
11. Sweep away any loose dry mortar with a soft brush and wash the slabs to remove traces of cement.
12. Leave to dry for 24 hours

Now sit back and enjoy that drink!
